Alien voices and inner dialogue: towards a developmental account of auditory verbal hallucinations
نویسنده
چکیده
The phenomenon of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) is one of the most intriguing features of the psychiatric literature. Two alternative models of the development of AVHs in both normal and psychotic populations are proposed. In the disruption to internalisation (DI) model, AVHs result from a disruption to the normal processes of internalisation of inner speech. In the re-expansion (RE) model, AVHs result when normal inner speech is re-expanded into inner dialogue under conditions of stress and cognitive challenge. Both models draw on Vygotsky’s (The Collected Works Of L.S. Vygotsky, New York, Plenum Press, 1987) ideas about the development of inner speech. On this view, normal inner speech is considerably abbreviated relative to external speech, and also undergoes some important semantic transformations. In both the DI and RE models, AVHs arise when the subject’s inner speech involves inappropriately expanded inner dialogue, leading the subject to experience the voices in the dialogue as alien. The two models may prove useful in explaining some of the socialdevelopmental evidence surrounding the phenomenon, and also make a number of testable predictions which are suggested as priorities for future research. r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. ________________________________________________________ Inner speech monitoring deficit : a study of auditory verbal hallucinations Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are speech perceptions in the absence of relevant external stimuli. Some accounts of AVHs claim that a deficit in inner speech monitoring causes the own verbal thoughts of the patient to be perceived as external voices. These ...
متن کاملRelationship of imprecise corollary discharge in schizophrenia to auditory hallucinations.
CONTEXT A forward model of intended thoughts and actions prepares sensory cortex for sensations that are a consequence of those actions. Imprecision of the corollary discharge in schizophrenia may contribute to the misperception of inner experiences and thoughts as "voices" or auditory hallucinations. OBJECTIVES To assess the precision of the forward model in schizophrenia using the N100 comp...

BACKGROUND In this paper we consider verbal hallucinations as inner speech with pragmatics. The specific pragmatic properties of verbal hallucinations investigated included the number of voices, the characteristics that individuate the voices, the sequential characteristics of the dialogues between voice hearers and their voices, the dialogical positioning of voices hearers, voices and other in...
متن کاملThe phenomenology of inner speech: comparison of schizophrenia patients with auditory verbal hallucinations and healthy controls.
BACKGROUND Despite the popularity of inner-speech theories of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs), little is known about the phenomenological qualities of inner speech in patients with schizophrenia who experience AVHs (Sz-AVHs), or how this compares to inner speech in the non-voice-hearing general population. METHOD We asked Sz-AVHs (n=29) and a non-voice-hearing general population sample ...
متن کاملAn EMG study of the lip muscles during covert auditory verbal hallucinations in schizophrenia.
PURPOSE Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are speech perceptions in the absence of external stimulation. According to an influential theoretical account of AVHs in schizophrenia, a deficit in inner-speech monitoring may cause the patients' verbal thoughts to be perceived as external voices. The account is based on a predictive control model, in which individuals implement verbal self-monito...
